What is Proof of Spacetime?

Proof of Spacetime (PoSt) is a consensus mechanism used in decentralized storage networks like Filecoin to ensure that storage providers are actually providing the storage they are claiming to provide.

The basic idea behind PoSt is that storage providers on the network are required to periodically prove that they are still storing the data they were paid to store. This is done by requiring the storage provider to generate a proof that they are still storing the data at a specific point in time. This proof, called a “spacetime proof,” is then verified by other nodes on the network.

The PoSt mechanism helps to ensure that storage providers on the network are not “free-riding” and are actually providing the storage they are being paid for. It also helps to ensure that the data stored on the network is still available and retrievable.

When a client wants to retrieve their data from the network, they can request the data from multiple storage providers in parallel, which allows for fast and reliable data retrieval. The PoSt mechanism also helps to ensure that the data retrieved is accurate and has not been tampered with.

It is important to note that PoSt is a different consensus mechanism than the traditional Proof of Work (PoW) or Proof of Stake (PoS) that are used in other blockchain networks. PoSt is specific to decentralized storage networks and is focused on ensuring the availability and integrity of the stored data over time.

What Projects use Proof of Spacetime?

Filecoin is the most well-known cryptocurrency that uses Proof of Spacetime (PoSt) as its consensus mechanism. PoSt is specific to decentralized storage networks and is used to ensure that storage providers are actually providing the storage they are claiming to provide and that the data stored is still available and retrievable over time.

Filecoin is a decentralized storage network that enables clients to store and retrieve data in a more secure, private, and cost-effective way. Filecoin uses PoSt in conjunction with another consensus mechanism called Proof of Replication (PoRep) to ensure the integrity and durability of stored data.

There are other decentralized storage projects that are in development or have been proposed that also use PoSt as their consensus mechanism such as:

  • Textile Powergate
  • Storj
  • Sia
  • Chia
  • Arweave
  • MaidSafe
  • IPFS

However, please note that this list may not be exhaustive and new projects may emerge. Additionally, some of these projects may not be live yet, or not have a coin or token that is traded on an exchange.
